Dramatic Dolphin Rescue From Illegal Fisher’s Net

This occured in the Mamiraua Ecological Reserve in the Brazilian Amazon. Fishing of any sort is illegal in this reserve. However, traps are often laid under the cover of darkness. My team and I were studying dolphin sound patterns when suddenly we noticed a high frequency of distress calls. Upon further investigation, we came across the net, and the rest you can see for yourself.

This was a female Boto (bottle-nosed) dolphin found in many river systems across the world (Amazon, Ganges, Yangzhe, etc). The males Botos are pink in colour; an exquisite sight! The Boto dolphins are hunted illegally because their meat is a highly effective bait for cat fishes. If captured, this dolphin’s body would have made its way to Columbia, where cat fishes are a local delicacy.
