Center City Philadelphia
Philadelphia City Planning Commission, 1960
http://sceti.library.upenn.edu/pages/index.cfm?so_id=2601
The goal of the Planning Commission was to work toward creating a total system of open spaces that would give [Center City] unity and distinction (14), building upon the four prominent squares of open space. Specifically, it aimed to create open space around Independence Hall to provide a buffer between the business centers and Society Hills residential area, create green space by the Delaware Riverfront, green the space to the west of City Hall, and extend Fairmont Park southward to touch Center City.
Today, all of these goals have been met as planned (not taking into account the projects timelines). Independence Hall is surrounded by green space, especially to the area separating it from Society Hill. Walkways allow people to go directly from Society Hill to Independence Hall and back. The Delaware Riverfront is bustling with activity in its open areas. City Hall, with its famous Love Park, serves as a prominent landmark and gathering space for residents and tourists alike. And both Fairmont Parks physical space maintenance has been well conserved.
Not only have all of these goals been met, but additional open space has actually sprouted. Fairmont Park has extended even further than originally planned. Spots of green space dot Old City, Society Hill, and the areas westward of those. Schools and athletic facilities now lie across Center City, but especially to the northwest of Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Interestingly, northeast Center City increased in green areas, which I found strange because there must have been a large population of people already living there by the river, and it seems difficult to replace people with trees. Nothing much has deviated from this 1960 plan. All of the major works were accomplished, and the significant differences are small and spread throughout Center City, each on its own small scale.
The process of georeferencing a map was not too difficult with enough patience to match an uncooperative image with the streets.shp file. The georeferenced product looked good; the map was clear in conveying its message. However, it was difficult creating an image that would complement the Google Earth images well. It was tough adjusting the image by increasing the georeferenced files opacity to a level what would reveal both the 1960 and the current map; either the white background in the georeferenced image would block out the green space on the present-day map, or the shaded 1960 open space wouldnt be clear enough. I tried shading the gray areas orange in Photoshop, which made it slightly more visible. However, its still much easier to identify differences between the two maps by quickly clicking a layer on and off. (Id love to learn how to present these maps in a clearer fashion!) The second and more minor problem I encountered was that the buildings in Google Earth would cover the georeferenced file, which forced me to analyze everything more closely to determine whether a building popped up above a space that was originally planned to be open. Until I discovered the 3D Buildings layer on Google Earth an hour later, that is.
This georeferenced map could be used by the city to point out that not only has the government met their goals for open space, and not only has open space been preserved, but that open spaces have proliferated across Center City.

African trypanosomiasis. Commonly called sleeping sickness, this disease is caused by a parasitic microbe transmitted by tsetse flies. If untreated, the parasite migrates to the central nervous system, causing seizures, mental disorders and, ultimately, death. As many as 70,000 people are infected in Central and East Africa.
American trypanosomiasis. Commonly called Chagas disease, this disease is caused by a parasitic microbe transmitted by blood-sucking bugs. It can cause organ damage. The parasite infects about 13 million people, mostly in Latin America.
Hookworm. Human hookworm infection is caused by intestinal worm parasites transmitted to humans from contaminated soil. It causes internal blood loss and is the world’s leading cause of anemia and protein malnutrition, particularly in pregnant women and children. More than half a billion people in poverty-stricken areas of Africa, Latin America, Southeast Asia and China are infected.
Leishmaniasis. This disease is caused by a parasitic microbe transmitted by sand flies. It can cause skin lesions and swelling of the spleen and liver. More than 12 million people are infected in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas.
Lymphatic filariasis. Commonly called elephantiasis, this parasitic worm disease is spread by mosquitoes. It can lead to disabling swelling of the legs and other body parts. About 120 million people are infected throughout Asia, Africa, the Western Pacific, South America and parts of the Caribbean.
Malaria. This disease is caused by a parasitic microbe spread by mosquitoes. Each year, malaria infects at least 300 million people living in tropical regions. It can cause brain damage or death if red blood cells infected with malaria parasites build up in the brain’s blood vessels. The annual death toll is about 1 million people, many of whom are children under age 5 and pregnant women.
Onchocerciasis. Commonly called river blindness, this parasitic worm disease is spread by black flies. It can cause extreme itching, sores on the skin and blindness. The parasite infects about 18 million people, mostly in Africa, but also in Latin America.
Schistosomiasis. Also known as bilharzia or snail fever, this parasitic worm disease is transmitted by snails that live in fresh water. It can impair growth, cause severe anemia and lead to kidney and liver malfunctions. More than 200 million people are infected, mostly in Africa and Asia.
A respectable number of parasite genomes have been mapped.

Has anyone yet succeeded in designing a control to from knowledge of the parasite genome?
As far as Schistosomiasis, it was just completed over the summer. Hopefully drugs to follow. see more here: http://bactiman63.blogspot.com/2009/07/genetic-code-to-schistosomes-complete.html

A person could sit and watch the river traffic on the Chao Phraya River for hours. Tugboats pulling long barges. Long tail boats. Rice boats used to carry rice and some converted for tourists. Then prepare to spend even more time by taking one of the ferries in either direction on the Chao Phraya. Get ready to move fast! The boats pull in. People jump off. Others jump on and it’s away in a flash. No time for the boatmen to wait for stragglers.
The ferry system is easy to work out with maps and English-speaking personnel selling tickets at all stops. The Navalai River Resort had Stop. No. 13 right at it’s doorstep…or riverstep. Fun, fun, fun in Bangkok and part of the whole experience. Don’t miss it….

Hi guys, I’ve never been to the United Kingdom before nor have I went or visited anywhere north or beyond New York. Just to let you guys know that in real life, there is nothing going on bad about household or family matters.
It all started in a dream, at a location situated between Pennsylvania to Indiana, and in a moment I just took off from home because I was sick of whatever that was going on in my life. I ran and ran and ran, and by the time I stopped, I found myself under a bridge or tunnel, and it looked something like this:
http://realneo.us/system/files/trash+under+bridge+2.JPG
(Note: This is the closest picture I’ve found that resembled the one in the dream)
Now on the right of where the picture taker is facing, you will see a river, and another big city on the other side. Behind you is a tunnel that goes into the dark. Now here’s the crazy part. When I ran from home, I had nothing with me but the clothes on my back. As you can see, I was really worried and frightened about where I should go, how my next meal will come to me, and how will I get a job.
Suddenly, a map appeared before me, and when I looked, there was a red dot that marked that I was in England. I was confused, so I took a closer look, and saw that Canada, Greenland, and Iceland had merged with the rest of Europe. It all made sense!
I felt uncomfortable under that tunnel and so I moved closer to the river, and there formed a new and safer road that I could travel on. As I look back at that tunnel/bridge, I caught glimpse of some homeless people, and even robbers. If I had stayed longer, who knew what would have happened.
The rest of the dream featured daycare centers and offices, but that’s not important.
"formed a new and safer road" it could mean you want a change in your life. taking new paths and the the part where u travel the world is probably your curiosity. so try something new and explore yourself. you ran away from home maybe because you were tired of dealing with something and wanted to start a new life?
