Chemistry question…?

The 5 great lakes form the worlds largest supply of fresh water. However, the great lakes are connected to 2 large bodies of salt water through a system of tributaries and rivers (including the st Lawrence seaway and the Mississippi river). Please describe how the great lakes remain fresh water despite being connected to large salt supplies.

because the water runs away from the lakes not into them. like how all water empties into the ocean the fresh water is dumped into the rivers and empties into the ocean. this is a really good question please vote mine as best i need the points=)
