009 Sound System – The Hero Waits – Red River Flood – 2009

It’s the people of the Red River Valley that make it so unique, As difficult as the flooding is to those affected, it’s almost like the people relish the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and work to save property of complete strangers.
Like many sandbaggers have said, “If it were MY property I would hope people would be there to help me out”. In most places people would say the reverse like “Its not my problem”.
Overheard on a sandbagging line: “Hey, my ex-wife lives somewhere on this street”. “Oh yeah, whats her name? I know everyone on this street”, said another. And when the ex said her name the response was: Um…… this is HER house. You’re working to save her house (amid howls of laughter). And the guy just sighed and kept on bagging. THAT is the toughness, comradery and feeling of community that comes with living in this part of the world. And like the river, that strength of character knows no boundaries.
Working the sand bag ‘chains’ were volunteers from several schools, a hutterite colony, church groups, young and old – even homeless people. That’s right, people with no home to live in were sandbagging to save the property of others. “Just giving back to the community that helps US out” said one.
A chain is only as strong as its weakest link and in the Red River Valley that chain is as strong as it gets.
